Are you sure we can do that?

And what do we do if we happen to come across some Wild Cattle?  Being out of the U.S. it always seems like there are less rules, and individuals are expected to take a reasonable amount of responsibility for there own safety.  Here in New Zealand they seem to take this to the extreme!  On arrival to Aukland you can go to the top of the space needle to have a view of the city.  Then you can decide if you would like to don an orange jumpsuit and walk around the edge, or just go for it and jump right off.  Here in the West we have beautiful surf beaches, but we've been warned not to go in unless we know how to "read the west coast waters".

I'm told hiking Taranaki is a must do, some people even opt to hike it in the middle of the night and watch the sunrise from the top,  but weather can change in an instant and you can find yourself lost in a cloud or caught in a blizzard so be careful, and make sure you are really fit.

Every little town has these fantastic pools with blow up obstacle courses, lots of kids, no rules.  Jump, push, go under, over, bring your boogie board.  Survival of the fittest!

We have a beautiful walkway that takes us along the sea,  climbing over electric fences full of cows that stare you down as you pass and beautiful cliffs that can trap you at high tide.  There is no mention of these perils anywhere, simply follow the orange posts with the W on it, with little stairs that lead you over these fences.

This weekend we are headed inland to Rotorua, a thermal area where we can dig our own hot tubs and see pots of boiling mud and geysers.  I'm told they are awesome,  but ....  "Be sure you don't get too close until you know how hot it is" You could fall in and boil yourself to death!  Yea!

Any tips on not getting Wild Cattle angry would be greatly appreciated!

Peter's Panoramas

Just a few pics to get started, easier and less intimidating than a blank screen to write in and fill.

Just a few pics of the journey having visited my Mom near Phoenix Arizona. Above is Papago Park pretty close to the middle of Phoenix.

Festival of Lights Fire Throwers

What's up peoples?  Here I am in "News ze Land"  I'm mean New Zealand, but that is how Eli says it.  Every little town here has giant swimming pools and somedays they put out these blow up obstacle courses which are pretty fun.  I had fun surfing on a really big board, I actually did pretty good.  We are missing the snow because it is summer here.  It sounds like you have lots of it.  Send me riddles if you have any!

Leaping Logan in Auckland

I'm in New Zealand!

So far I've only made two friends, Gavin & Griffin, they are here from America too.  Their Dad is a doctor too.  Everyone else is on summer vacation.  Believe it or not, in New Zealand I may be in seventh grade!  School starts next week so I will let you know.  I hear you have a ton of snow in Vermont.  I miss snow, but while you were playing in the snow, I have been surfing.  I'll post a picture when I get good!

Time Difference:  The best way to know what time it is here ...  Go back six hours and forward a day.  So if it is 1pm on tuesday in Vermont it would be 7am  wednesday in New Zealand.  I'm living in the future!!  That would be a good time to Skype someday!  You can also contact me by e-mail pseli@sover.net  or snail mail at 128 Tasman ST.  Opunake New Zealand 4616.  I'll be sending a package to school soon!

At the Beach in January?

There is another American doctor in town who will be here until May.  This is his wife Laurie with me. We brought our boys (5 boys between us)  for a hike around the Cliffs.  Lesson learned, check the tide chart before taking the Cliff walk.  Lucky for us the tide was headed out so we made it safely and had an adventure!  We did a little yoga to pass the time while we waited for the tide to lower.

I handled the all day flight to New Zealand, I've adjusted to the time zone, I'm gaining confidence driving on the left side of the road, but I have no idea what month it is.  Being on the beach in January just does not compute.  When filling out forms, I've learned to put the day before the month, but am always searching for a calendar to understand when I am!  The beaches here are even more beautiful than I imagined with cliffs leading down to the shore, and cows grazing on top.  Even now in the height of the summer we can find ourselves alone on the beach.  Normally I would find this very appealing, but I find myself searching for busier beaches as I'm feeling a little lonely in my new home.
