Are you sure we can do that?

And what do we do if we happen to come across some Wild Cattle?  Being out of the U.S. it always seems like there are less rules, and individuals are expected to take a reasonable amount of responsibility for there own safety.  Here in New Zealand they seem to take this to the extreme!  On arrival to Aukland you can go to the top of the space needle to have a view of the city.  Then you can decide if you would like to don an orange jumpsuit and walk around the edge, or just go for it and jump right off.  Here in the West we have beautiful surf beaches, but we've been warned not to go in unless we know how to "read the west coast waters".

I'm told hiking Taranaki is a must do, some people even opt to hike it in the middle of the night and watch the sunrise from the top,  but weather can change in an instant and you can find yourself lost in a cloud or caught in a blizzard so be careful, and make sure you are really fit.

Every little town has these fantastic pools with blow up obstacle courses, lots of kids, no rules.  Jump, push, go under, over, bring your boogie board.  Survival of the fittest!

We have a beautiful walkway that takes us along the sea,  climbing over electric fences full of cows that stare you down as you pass and beautiful cliffs that can trap you at high tide.  There is no mention of these perils anywhere, simply follow the orange posts with the W on it, with little stairs that lead you over these fences.

This weekend we are headed inland to Rotorua, a thermal area where we can dig our own hot tubs and see pots of boiling mud and geysers.  I'm told they are awesome,  but ....  "Be sure you don't get too close until you know how hot it is" You could fall in and boil yourself to death!  Yea!

Any tips on not getting Wild Cattle angry would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Shelley- Note on Rotorua, your not supposed to go over you head cause some thing (I forgot the name of it, a spore of some sorts) can go in through your ears, into your brain and kill you. Otherwise they are GREAT. The Lake is has some of this biggest trout (amazing fishing) in the world. Have fun! Also nearby are some caves of Wangaita, you tube through them and see glow worms.. very cool You wear helmets w/ the mining lights to see your way through...
